Dr. Sandra Cowden Johnson has been involved in the diagnosis and treatment of alcoholism and substance abuse (addiction) for over 25 years, initially as part of her practice as a family physician in private practice. It was there that she observed the destruction the disease of addiction caused clients and their families and friends. She was frustrated by not having sufficient time to treat this potentially devastating, but treatable disease.
In 2008 Dr. Johnson fully transitioned into the specialty of addiction medicine so that she could devote the time and energy needed to treat with understanding, dignity and respect those brave enough to seek care. She received her medical degree from the UC Davis School of Medicine. Her family practice residency was done at UCLA Northridge. She is Board Certified in family practice and by the American Board of Addiction Medicine. Dr. Johnson is certified to treat clients with buprenorphine (Suboxone). She is also certified to conduct comprehensive professional and fitness-for-duty evaluations. Currently, she serves on the Diversion Evaluation Committee for the California Board of Registered Nurses.
Dr. Johnson truly enjoys guiding clients through their recovery process. During treatments, she evaluates the whole family and helps them determine the best treatment options for the client as well as the family. Depending on the client and their situation, she is able to incorporate medication, individual and family counseling, outpatient treatment and inpatient treatment.
